Dr. Angel Chan

Dr. Angel Chan is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her training is interdisciplinary in nature, including Speech Therapy (BSc (Hons) from HKU where she also obtained her clinical qualifications as a speech therapist), Linguistics (MPhil from CUHK), and Psycholinguistics (PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany & University of Leipzig, Germany).

Dr. Chan studies child first and second language acquisition in cross-linguistic and multilingual contexts, so far involving Cantonese, Mandarin, English and German. Her interests also include typological-functional and processing approaches to the study of language acquisition, clinical linguistics, and the development of speech and language assessment tools for Hong Kong children’s L2 English and L2 Mandarin. With Prof. Kathy Lee and Prof. Virginia Yip at CUHK, Dr. Chan has been developing a receptive vocabulary test for assessing Hong Kong children and Mainland children’s vocabulary competence in Mandarin, based on the developmental norms from Beijing.
